As director Francis Lawrence pulls back, we see Times Square is covered in weeds, and that all of New York has been transformed into a ghost town. The next - and for a long time, the last - person we see is Neville, roaring around the eerily deserted streets of Manhattan in a bright red sports car. This claim appears to be true, as far as it goes, but overlooks a nasty side-effect of the super-virus, which is superbad. “So you have actually cured cancer?” asks a television interviewer. ![]() The movie begins with a research scientist explaining that she has bio-engineered a super-virus to reverse the effects of what is then the world’s greatest health scourge. Smith also manages to wring considerable emotion from Neville’s relationship with his dog and carries the picture’s action scenes with the same abundant swagger that has been his trademark since “Independence Day,” his first spin through the sci-fi apocalypse. Smith manages to make this long lonely stretch tolerable, keeping the movie’s tone light even when Neville starts to act a little creepy, implying he’d like to get jiggy with a mannequin he “meets” at the video store. But even with Smith acting up a storm, what starts out as a potentially fascinating picture about an apocalyptic plague soon devolves into yet another special-effects laden zombie movie. That’s why it helps that Will Smith, the people’s movie star, plays Neville in “I Am Legend,” Hollywood’s third attempt to get the classic 1954 sci-fi novel by Richard Matheson right. Savior Doctor Robert Neville is not what you’d call a people person.īut, let’s face it, when you’re the Last Man on Earth, your people skills are bound to get a little rusty. ![]()
